Erik Sommer
Erik Sommer (b. 1978. Duluth, Minnesota) is an American artist and curator living and working in New York. His recent stained spray paint on raw canvas pieces are created through a method of staining, soaking and transferring paint.
Sommer starts by layering raw canvas on top of raw canvas and heavily soaking the outer canvas until the paint seeps through to the canvas behind. Relying on controlled chance, he manipulates these effects to create aleatory marks and images that appear bold and vibrant yet blanched and aged. By recreating the aging process Sommer is able to affect time in a way that allows each piece to exist within an absence of time.
Sommer is the founder and operator of Mott Projects, a contemporary art project space in New York that focuses on international contemporary painting and sculpture.
